If You Don’t Love Your School – You Don’t Have to Stay There!

In the past two years since I started Love Your School, I have heard a lot of different stories from families about their child’s educational experiences. Everything from how much they adore the faculty and staff at their school, to how disappointed they are that their child’s struggles are not being acknowledged or helped in the ways they deem necessary.

Oftentimes, the conversations may center around a sense of guilt that the parent has done something wrong in this process, when I can say confidently that is almost always not the case. As parents, we all want what is best for our child, period. No one is going to advocate for our children the way we will, and no one has their best interests in mind more than we do. So, why does it seem that the families I work with often feel a sense of obligation or attachment to their child’s school, and worry about how they will be perceived if they go somewhere else?

A few reasons come to mind:

  1. When the current learning environment isn’t working, we may often feel like it’s our fault, for any number of reasons.
  2. As parents, we often feel the pressure that something we aren’t doing at home is the cause of our child’s struggles.
  3. If we acknowledge that the current educational environment isn’t working for our child, it feels like we made the wrong decision, and somehow its permanent.
  4. We worry about what others will think if we leave, and how our child will adjust to a new school if we decide to make a change.

These are all legitimate feelings and concerns that some parents may experience, but as someone who is both a parent and who works to help families find the educational environment that works best for their child, you need to know, if you don’t love your school, you don’t have to stay there!

If the educational environment that your child is currently in is not working or meeting their needs, then you can make a change, and we are here to help if you need it!
